Description
The fabulous New Wood River flows right past one of the most beautiful hunting camps in Northern Wisconsin. For decades, this large property has provided a perfect place for friends and family to escape to. The cabin boasts 3 bedrooms, a large living area that looks out over the river, a very comfortable kitchen with Hickory cabinets and a bath with washer and dryer. Across the driveway from the cabin is the "Morton Inn", as you will see the name fits. It was cleverly designed to provide 4 bedrooms and a bath along with a large storage area for all the toys and equipment needed for the week's events. "The Perch" may likely become your favored place to relax and spend the night. With several bunk beds and a corner desk, you might find yourself wanting to actually write a letter or finish the journal you started when you were here last; what a perfect place to enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning or a glass of wine at day's end. Its name becomes obvious when you notice that it sits on its own high spot overlooking the rest of the camp. Since this is a large property, another very nice storage building was built to house the tractors, mowers and maintenance equipment. A radio tower allows everyone to stay in touch with the folks in the cabin, and a cell phone booster is also in place to allow you to stay in touch with the rest of the world. At the end of a long day of walking the mowed trails, find your way to the sauna or, if the temperature is warm, maybe jump in the river to cool off. This property has been very well managed over decades by logging specific small locations designed to create habitat for grouse and deer. There is always new growth to attract and then hold resident species. The results have been fabulous. Every year, because of careful management, hunters get the chance to enjoy flushing grouse all day long, or as long as their legs will carry. The number of side trails that loop back onto main trails would be hard to count. The network of trails on this property will astound even the most seasoned hunter. Your dog will have more chances to show his or her talents here than on any ground we have ever walked or hunted. As you get closer to the river you can expect action to include local ducks and woodcocks, but don't be surprised when some Northern geese or ducks are encountered following the river or heading to "Grandma's Lake" (found due south of camp). This 2 1/4-acre lake is deep and has deer trails leading to it from all directions. Being completely surrounded by woods, it provides a great opportunity to sit over decoys when the flight is on. Just northeast of camp is another 25-acre lake fed by Wolf Creek. It is here that you can expect to see waterfowl on virtually any day prior to freezing. It is quiet throughout the entire property. There is nothing to push wildlife to another location, this is a peaceful place in all respects. The New Wood River flows for over 4,800 feet through the property, making many turns and creating hundreds of places to find fish, before leaving the property. The water quality is tremendous and boasts healthy populations of large trout and smallmouth. You can expect lots of action so be sure to bring your waders. The bed of the river is sandy/stony and very large boulders are seen everywhere in the river. Undercuts along the banks and the back sides of logs and boulders will produce action with most casts. If you have ever fished a river you already know that you will likely spend the day alone. Every corner has a new and better picture of what God created and every step gets you closer to the end of a perfect day. When you are near the river you can expect to see deer and bear, waterfowl and small creatures, so be sure to take a camera. A few of the 40s are enrolled in Managed Forest Closed (you decide who hunts your land) and a number are enrolled in MFL Open. However, the access to the open MFL parcels is from a point 3/4 mile to the east and behind a locked gate. Nobody wants to walk that far before they can start to hunt. As such, the owners never see anyone else on their property other than their invited guests or family members. 600 feet south of the cabin is the bridge that gives access to the land on the other side of the river. The bridge is well maintained and will certainly hold a very large tractor and its equipment, a UTV or a truck. With the woods roads in such good condition, you will definitely want to take advantage of seeing the entire property on an ATV or snowmobile. Throughout the property you will notice large piles of gravel, the material made available for quick trail or road repairs. Another storage building is located on the east end of the property for reasons of convenience. Think about having this much land with its wonderful high spots, and just the right amount of lowland, Grandma's Lake, over 4,800 feet of frontage (on both sides) of the New Wood River, over 2,100 feet of frontage on a 25-acre private lake, a fabulous cabin, the Morton Inn with its accomodations and storage, a beautiful sauna, the Perch, and another large storage building all at one location. Think about escaping your busy life as you travel beyond the locked gate and arrive at the river. Imagine crossing the bridge and walking the groomed trails all day long flushing grouse after grouse, then finding a spot at the edge of the river to wet a line. If you can imagine a place of peace it will most likely look just like this one. The chairs by the firepit at the edge of the river will call you back time after time. Then there is the sound of the New Wood, making that same wonderful call to you as it has for hundreds of years. Can you see it in your mind's eye? Can you feel what it can be like for your family? For the most accurate description of what this fabulous property can provide for you and your family, be sure to call Ryan Patrick or Terry Patrick, the listing agents. Hunting season is not that many months away and the trout and smallmouth are waiting for you right now. Call today for a personal tour of this tremendous property.
