TR: The location was very attractive. Situated in Unit 10, it's famous for its exceptional elk genetics and trophy potential. The area is a big hunting destination, and we were captivated by the thought of owning a piece of land where we could pursue our passion for elk hunting. The scenic beauty of the ranch, with its diverse landscapes and tons of wildlife, really made this place stand out as incredibly unique. It felt like the perfect blend of rugged wilderness and accessible terrain.
WP: What was it about the presentation and offering of the ranch that stood out to you?
TR: The presentation was incredibly thorough and detailed. Whitetail Properties did a phenomenal job in compiling all the essential information a buyer would need to make an informed decision on a ranch like this. The listing was comprehensive and well documented. It was really impressive to see a place of this magnitude organized and detailed with descriptions of the land, wildlife, water sources and history the way Craig (Sanchez) and Whitetail Properties presented it. Also, it wasn’t just the presentation. They also got really creative in discussing potential for improvements and ways it could provide further ROI. WP: Is this purchase primarily for recreational use and value or investment potential as well?
TR: It’s definitely a combination of both. On the recreational side, I’m thrilled about the opportunities for hunting and outdoor activities that the ranch offers. The idea of spending time on the land, enjoying the natural beauty and wildlife in this rugged, expansive area of the southwest is a dream come true. From an investment perspective, the ranch represents a sound financial decision. It’s comforting to know that while we’re enjoying the land, its value is likely to appreciate over time. WP: What is your favorite part of the ranch?
TR: I’m particularly fond of the big flat top area with its mild terrain and habitat mix. It’s a hunter’s dream, offering a perfect balance of challenge and accessibility. The setup allows for both active hunting, like chasing bugles in the timber and hills, and more passive approaches, like ambush setups and funnels near the creeks and expansive food sources in the valleys. It’s rare to find a ranch that can offer the hunt and adventure of your choosing and is impossible to just pick one favorite feature on this place. After experiencing it, it’s clear to see why it’s so iconic in the Zuni Mountains and across New Mexico.
WP: Tell us about the elk numbers on the ranch. How unique are the numbers compared to other ranches around the area?
TR: The elk numbers on the Ol' Man Ranch are outstanding. The ranch has a well-established population with a healthy age structure, ensuring that there are plenty of mature bulls and good genetics to follow. Compared to other ranches in the region, the density and quality of the elk herd here are exceptional. It’s not just the quantity that stands out, but the overall health and size of the animals, which speaks to the superior habitat and management practices in place. No doubt New Mexico is known for incredible ranches with world-class elk hunting. Even in that arena, with the management practices and history on the Ol’ Man, we feel it’s a cut above in this region.
