Derek Fisher is a sales manager at Whitetail Properties.
Derek joined Whitetail Properties in 2009, relocating to Kentucky, after a 14-year career as a physical education and health instructor in the New England region’s public school system. Looking back, he considers the move a leap of faith.
“I left a great teaching job — its stability, healthcare and retirement benefits — to begin a career in a new state with no contacts,” he says. Few career opportunities are as reliant on existing contacts and professional relationships as work in the real estate industry. And Derek, upon arriving in Kentucky, had none. He moved his family 1,000 miles away from all the support anyone could ask for to work for a company in its infancy.
Still, Whitetail Properties offered the type of work that aligned with who Derek was as a person. It’s a move that couldn’t be justified on paper, but was propelled by prayer and his own personal faith. Since joining Whitetail Properties, his success at the rural real estate company has been a byproduct of his most innate interests. And it’s a testament to how one’s personal interests can complement the work one chooses.
Early in his career at Whitetail Properties, Derek worked as a Land Specialist connecting buyers and sellers of rural properties. Today, he manages the company’s Land Specialists, which involves hiring new sales agents and providing oversight in the area of sales. He also ensures that all sales documentation is completed properly by following the varying guidelines and requirements of more than 10 states in his region. Derek also serves as a mentor to new agents, and leads new initiatives for the company like coordinating leadership teams and other internal groups that aid in the company’s processes and efficiencies.
Derek holds a master’s degree in education. He was born in Vermont and lived in Maine for most of his upbringing. An avid hunter and landowner himself, Derek currently owns rural property in Kentucky. He is married to Carrie, and they are parents to three sons and a daughter.
